It’s that time of year again when the air turns cool and crisp and the leaves start to change. Fall brings a welcomed relief from the summer heat. Along with the beautiful weather, it brings all the fun things we love about fall.

Cozy up with an apple spice candle, indulge in a caramel apple, eat and drink all things pumpkin spice while you watch the beautiful colors of the changing autumn leaves. But of course we don’t just want to watch this from the inside! The fall season is the perfect opportunity to get outside and enjoy this cool crisp weather with the family. Here is a list of pumpkin patches you can visit for great outdoor family fun and be sure to pick some pumpkins and bring them home to welcome fall.


Dark Leaf Farms

This is a diversified farm that currently raises tobacco, wheat, corn, soybeans, and pumpkins! Dark Leaf Farms opens their operation every year beginning in late September for people to pick their own pumpkins. Their opening day this year will be Sunday, September 24 starting at 1:00 pm.

Dickie Brothers Orchard


This Orchard is already open for pumpkin picking! They not only grow pumpkins, but apples, peaches, nectarines, blackberries, plums, pears, sweet potatoes, corn, and more.

They currently have golden delicious apples, sun crisp apples, and pumpkins to pick. Dickie Brothers Orchard also offers pre-picked gala apples, jonagold apples, empire apples, and frozen black raspberries.

Jeter Farm

Jeter Farm is a family owned farm that offers a corn maze, hayrides, slides, pumpkins, barnyard animals, and games from Saturday, September 20th until Sunday, October 29th.

Make sure to check out their Country Store while you are there which is stocked with locally made, VA Grown, and Virginia's finest crafts and products. General admission includes their corn maze, hay rides, u-pick pumpkin, slides, barnyard zoo, games, and more.

Layman Family Farms


If you have time to drive out of town for the day, Layman Family Farm is located about 40 minutes from Lynchburg in Blue Ridge, VA and offers lots of fall family fun. Their opening day is Saturday, September 16th.

They offer hayrides to pick your own pumpkin, a huge 8 acre corn maze, a country store where you can purchase treats and refreshments as well as Indian corn, prepicked pumpkins, fall decorations and more. Be sure to check out the goats, chickens and pigs, the cow train, the pumpkin blaster, the jumping pillow, tunnel slide and corn cannon. They also offer birthday party options on the farm. And don’t forget to take a wonderful fall photo on their larger than life rocking chair!

Silver Creek & Seaman's Orchard

Silver Creek & Seaman's Orchard offers more than just picking your own pumpkins. They also offer apple picking rain or shine, an Apple Butter Making Festival on October 7th and 21st, and another event called Pink Lady Fun Day on October 28th. 

The best part about this place is that it's open daily for pumpkin picking.

Sinkland Farms


This will be Sinkland Farms' 27th Annual Pumpkin Festival. They will be open for 5 weekends September 29th through October 29th. Sinklank Farms offers ice cream, coffee, cider, hot chocolate, pumpkins for sale, gourds, squashes, retail sales, wagon rides, and a corn maze. 

Admission includes hayrides to the pumpkin fields to pick your own great pumpkin, brain-twisting corn maze, farmyard animals, and even live music. This year they will have 3 giant slides and a new Kid's Zone!

Smith’s Pumpkin Patch

Smith’s Pumpkin Patch has been serving the Lynchburg area for over 20 years. Come check them out from September 24th to November 7th. They are centrally located right on Fort Avenue in Lynchburg.

You can get an All Day Pass which includes access to the corn maze, Noah’s ark play area, and lots of bounce houses (Castle Bounce, Noah's Ark, Chaos, Jungle Bounce, Titanic Slide), Teepee and Hay Bails. (Season passes are also available.)

They have a special Home School Day on October 13th 10am - 8pm. If your child has a fall birthday, here’s a great birthday party idea:

White Fall Farm


White Fall Farm is all about connecting people to rural life and the food they eat. At this location, you can find The Pumpkin Hunt, their annual Fall event, locally grown produce, naturally raised beef and grain. 

At their Pumpkin Hunt events, you can find grain piles, the hay bale maze, unlimited hayrides, bonfires in the evening, farm animals, free play zone, rustic photo ops, pumpkin painting, pumpkin hunts, pick your own pumpkins and gourds, and the hay bale castle. Their general admission is $10.00 per person.

Yoder’s Farm

If you're looking to stay a little closer to home, Yoder’s Farm is located right in Rustburg, VA and offers fun fall activities as well. Every fall they open their corn maze for family fun. The corn maze has grown to cover over 10 acres. During the fall corn maze season they also host field trips.

Activities can include an attempt on the corn maze, pumpkin picking and a hayride. Also during their corn maze season, they offer a pick-your-own pumpkin patch as well as plenty of pre-picked pumpkins. The farm store carries tomatoes, jams, jellies, apples, cook books and various seasonal baked goods. Yum!
