The James River is full of places to explore and enjoy the scenery from the water. James River Adventures, Wilderness Canoe Co. and James River Runners are just 3 companies nearby that offer all the resources you need to have fun in the water like tubes, canoes, kayaks, and rafts. 

Ivy Creek Park

Distance from Lynchburg: approx. 15 mins

Ivy Creek Park is a green oasis that includes the 6-acre Clemmons Lake, multiple trails, picnic and play areas. The park's amenities also include canoe and kayak rentals on the lake between May-September every weekend.


Splash Valley

Distrance from Lynchburg: approx. 1.5 hours

Splash Valley is an outdoor aquatic facility featuring two 34-foot high slides, a current river, children's sprayground, tube and bowl slides, water features and more! If you're looking for a nearby water park, this is one you do not want to miss this summer!

Lynchburg has 2 public spraygrounds. The Riverside Park Sprayground and the Riverfront Park Sprayground which are the ultimate summertime destination for children. Both are fun and free all summer long for everyone to enjoy. They offer a splash of fun and a great way to cool down this summer.

Holliday Lake State Park

Distance from Lynchburg: approx. 1 hour 

Holliday Lake State Park is located in the Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest in Virginia. They offer swimming at the park's beach, hiking trails, campgrounds, playgrounds, boat ramps, and more. The park rents canoes, kayaks, job boats, stand-up paddleboards, and paddle boats for all your water fun this summer!


Lake Monacan

Distance from Lynchburg: approx. 1 hour

Lake Monocan is a 20-acre lake and park located at Stoney Creek. It features snack bars, canoes, kayaks, fishing equipment, sand volleyball courts, sandy beach, lounge chairs, picnic area, and outdoor charcoal grills.

Smith Mountain Lake

Distance from Lynchburg: approx. 1 hour

Smith Mountain Lake is the second largest freshwater lake in the state of Virginia. It is a family oriented facility that provides several water activities to enjoy including swimming, boat rentals and a fishing pier. 


Claytor Lake State Park

Distance from Lynchburg: approx. 2 hours

Claytor Lake State Park is the ideal place to go when you want to swim, camp, hike or event have a picnic. This Lake is known for sport fishing and boating with a full-service marina. You can rent bikes, enjoy a fishing pier, playgrounds and picnic shelters!

Cascade Falls

Distance from Lynchburg: approx. 2 hours

Cascade Falls is located near Pembroke, VA. The 4-mile roundtrip hike is mostly flat and suitable for most people. You are rewarded with a beautiful view of the waterfall. You can even swim in the water, although it is usually quite chilly!

Panther Falls is a beautiful waterfall and swimming hole located on the Pedlar River, east of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The hike to the falls is only about .4 miles, and you can choose to take the lower road or the higher road. You can even jump from the rock ledges!

Falling Spring Falls

Distance from Lynchburg: approx. 2 hours 

Falling Spring Falls is located on Route 220 in Alleghany County, 5 miles north of Covington, VA. The overlook, grounds, and picnic area has recently undergone renovations. This 80 foot waterfall is stunning. Thomas Jefferson described it as a "remarkable cascade...falling over a rock [...] to the valley below."

Distance from Lynchburg: approx. 1 hour

Crabtree Falls' waterfall has the highest drop east of the Mississippi River. The falls are located in Nelson County 6 miles off the Blue Ridge Parkway. There are 5 major waterfalls in this area as well as a few smaller ones. The first overlook is just a few feet from the parking area which makes it perfect for travelers of all abilities. Those who wish to can hike the 3 mile trail to the 4 other overlooks that have gorgeous views of the Falls and Tye River Valley.

Whiteoak canyon

Distance from Lynchburg: approx. 2.5 hours

Whiteoak Canyon has 6 waterfalls, and each has a swimming hole at the bottom. Although the hikes in this area are quite strenuous, they are still very popular with experienced hikers. There is even a "natural slide" for the truly adventurous!
